Four months on half-pay. I do not think we can allow him to take any half-pay at all. If his leave certificate is incorrect, he will get into trouble at least on this salary.

We might give him a alimentary allowance at the rate of quarter - salary at 3/.8. less
And no contribution, youd we ought to send him a paper of particulars, and inform you when he replies.

I have examined Mr C. V. Ledas, Colonial Veterinary Surgeon, Hongkong, and have the honour to report that he is at present in good health and to all appearances is capable of performing his duties as he ever was. But in view of his medical history during the last six years, his somewhat feeble physique, his proved liability to recurring and disabling attacks of dysentery, and of the intimation contained in Sir Henry Blake's letter herewith returned to the effect that the duties of the Colonial Veterinary Surgeon, Hongkong, are to extend to the active supervision of veterinary matters in the New Territory - I do not consider it probable that were Mr Ledas to return to Hongkong that he would remain in vigorous health during the hot season.

Your obedient Servant,
A. Manson.
